Fine Arts Program & Music Program
At Gerald McShane Elementary School, the Art class is a vibrant space where creativity comes to life! Led by a dedicated art education specialist, students explore a variety of media and techniques, from painting and drawing to sculpture and mixed media. In this stress-free environment, children are encouraged to express themselves freely, fostering both creativity and critical thinking. Each project allows students to explore new ideas, take risks, and create their own masterpieces while having fun along the way. It's a place where imagination takes center stage, and every child’s unique artistic voice is celebrated!
Gerald McShane Elementary’s Music Program will get your kids’ feet dancing! Led by Ms. Alongi, students develop a love for performance, appreciation, and creative aspects of music at all levels.
Beginning in K-4 through to Grade 6, all students participate in singing and movement activities in a group context. The Kodaly and Orff approach to music teaching is used in a fun way to reinforce the concept of steady beat, pitch-making skills, rhythmic dictation, and cooperative learning. Students also become familiar with orchestral instruments and learn to listen to music with a discerning ear. In Grades 2-3-4, students are given foundational knowledge to hone their skills to learn how to read and play music in an ensemble setting (using Orff instruments and the Ukulele).
In Grades 5-6, students take part in a concert band program. All instruments are loaned to students for the year at no extra cost. At this level, students work independently as they learn to play brass instruments, such as the trumpet, trombone, and tuba; woodwind instruments like the clarinet, flute, saxophone and percussion instruments. Cooperation, rhythmic and pitch accuracy, musicality, and self-discipline are at the core of the elementary band program.
Lastly, students participate in annual musicals, concerts, (e.g.: Remembrance Day ceremonies). GMS tries to organize cultural outings, which students have opportunities to listen to professional ensembles, orchestras, and ballets.
If your child wishes to experience more music beyond the class time, Ms. Alongi has extra-curricular musical activities that can further nourish their creative soul.
